Frequently asked questions

FAQs

What is the weather like around Koh Samui?

We encourage our guests to not reply on accurate information from Mobile Phone weather apps. They are not always accurate or sufficently detailed. Rain showers can be very localised and shortlived most of the year round.

Please check with us directly for detailed advice and to confirm your understanding of conditions.

We also rely on reports from captains, live webcams and official weather station reports at various different locations.

Check out our Koh Samui Weather page for more information

Can we book a half day tour to Ang Thong National Marine Park?

Everything is possible given the right weather conditions and managed expecations. A full day 8 hour charter booking is required even if only going there for 30 minutes to take photos and come back, this is due to the journey time of approximately 70-90 minutes each way (depending on whether reaching Koh Wao for snorkeling or Koh Wao Tulap for the Emerald Lagoon and panoramic viewpoint)

We can reduce the tour time to between 4 and 6 hours if no snorkeling is required.

We can also combine visiting viewpoints at Ang Thong and Koh Tao in the same day (only by speedboat or motor yacht) however please be advised there is a significant additional fuel and engine hours surcharge. Please feel welcome to contact us for a quotation.

We would love to see some traditional Thai dancing, how can you help?

This is such a wonderful cultural experience that can be seen across Thailand. We can recommend shows on Samui and can make arrangements for your group to see these when you book with Samui Luxury Boats.

We would like to experience a longtail boat taxi, can this be arranged?

Certainly, as part of your boat tour, we can arrange for your group to travel in a longtail boat. It is one of the more iconic images of Thailand and we know some of the best operators.

Naturally, we can’t describe them as “luxury” so they do not appear on our website. Maybe we should launch “samuifunboats.com”?

Which Samui restaurants do you recommend and can you help with reservations?

Samui is such a dynamic environment for restaurant options. If you let us know what you are looking for, we can happily recommend options and secure reservations for you during your stay on Samui.

We have seen spectacular footage on fire shows on the beaches in Thailand, is this a service you provide?

We can make arrangements for this vent during your boat tour. Just request this on your booking form and we will organise it for you.

How can I see the prices and inclusions?

Please browse our website catalog and submit an inquiry

Inform us of your approximate budget, preference for boat type and the number of guests in your group

We can then recommend you the best speed boat or motor yacht – most suitable for Ang Thong National Marine Park or Koh Tao due to journey times (80-90 minutes each way)

Or suggest the most suitable catamaran or sailing yacht – ideal for cruises around Koh Samui or Koh Phangan with less tourists and more unspolit nature

It’s helpful for us to know your budget or the best rate you have seen elsewhere so we can ensure that our offering is what you need.

For prices and inclusions you can visit our catalog on WhatsApp

You will find categories for each boat type, you can click view on each boat/yacht and then see more for all of the details.

Please feel welcome to call or email us for any specific boat prices or quotations.

Is there a bathroom onboard?

Yes! All the boats/yacht we work with have a fully functional marine bathroom or even a full ensuite bathroom with hot fresh water shower! We understand our guests want to shower off salty water before drying off from a swim.

What is the cancellation policy for bad weather?

Please visit our cancellation policy page.

If you have any concerns or questions about specific scenarios we are happy to advise you further. Get in touch for a quotation.

How does the free transfer work?

We provide complimentary round trip transfers by private air conditioned car or minivan. Contact us for a charter or tour quotation.

What are the journey times between islands?

Please take a look at our interactive map to learn more about the journey times from Koh Samui to the various destinations

High specification speed boat and motor yacht typically cruise at speeds 2-3 times faster than sailing by catamaran or sailing yacht.

There is limited snorkeling (lack of marine life and ocean visibility) close by to Koh Samui, therefore it is important to understand the necessary journey times and allow us to advise you the best itinerary.

Google MyMaps by Samui Luxury Boats (link opens in new window)

Travelling by speed boat or motor yacht, departing from north east Koh Samui with average cruising speeds of 22-28 knots:

– Koh Phangan (snorkeling spot – north west at Koh Raham/Koh Ma) – Approximately 45-50 minutes in average conditions

– Koh Tan (snorkeling spot – south Koh Samui) – Approximately 45-50 minutes in average conditions

– Ang Thong National Marine Park (snorkeling spot – north at Koh Wao) – Approximately 80-85 minutes in average conditions

– Koh Tao & Nangyuan Island  (snorkeling spot – north west at Koh Nangyuan) – Approximately 90 minutes in average conditions

Please note for Sailing Yacht or Catamaran, cruising at 8-10 knots takes 2 or 3 times longer so better to stay closer to Koh Phangan and around Samui unless considering overnight tours.

For the Ang Thong National Marine Park a 9-10 hour charter is required in suitable conditions (2 -3.5 hours each way is possible depending on ocean conditions – therefore itinerary can change to suit your preferences) Koh Tao & Nanguyan would lake 4+ hours from Koh Samui by catamaran or sailing yacht.

What is an Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

What is APA in relation to super yacht charter?

This only applies to www.samuiluxuryyacht.com

We’ve got the answers… Everything you need to know about Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA)
The world of yachting can be full of strange words and abbreviations, and here at Samui Luxury Boat we know it can be a little confusing.. So here is a little guide to one of the main ones when it comes to chartering a yacht.

What is APA in yacht charter?
APA stands for Advanced Provisioning Allowance. How exactly it works and why it exists may seem confusing. With this in mind, the Samui Luxury Boat team thought it would be a good idea to break things down and start from the beginning, so here goes!

What is APA for?
When chartering a yacht, the charter fee generally only covers the rental cost of the yacht, and any crew that come with it. So how do you pay for fuel or provisions for your trip? This is where APA comes in. It is an additional fee which will cover all these extras, such as food, drink, fuel, berthing costs, customs, communications… APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is the standard system to pay your expenses on a luxury yacht charter. The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain (and chef) on the yacht to provision on your behalf.

How does APA work?
APA is generally calculated as a percentage of the charter fee, which you then pay in addition, before the charter commences. The broker or the captain will use this allowance to stock the boat, and fuel up. Any left over money will be returned to the client, at the end of the charter. Whilst on board, the captain will be in charge of the APA and has to keep any receipts necessary, as record for you, the client. He/she should also keep you updated as the charter progresses, of how much is being spent, and anything else you need to be aware of.

APA will apply, as standard on pretty much most professional yacht charters, and is close to obligatory for all luxury yacht charters.

When does APA apply?
APA will apply, as standard on pretty much most professional yacht charters, and is close to obligatory for all luxury yacht charters. There are a few sailing yachts and motor yachts, more commonly in regions such as South East Asia which offer all inclusive packages. The difference with a luxury yacht charter and an all inclusive trip, is that on a luxury yacht charter you personally choose, in advance, whatever you would like to have on the yacht. Therefore if you want the best Champagne and the rarest selection of cigars, wine and the finest of meats, caviar etc.. you must pay for it, from the APA. The broker and the yacht crew will happily source and select all provisions on your behalf, they need the funds in order to do so, hence the APA.

How much is APA?
The amount varies from yacht to yacht, but is generally between 30% and 40% of the yacht charter fee. For example, it will be higher if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption, if you plan on doing lots of travelling, if you order the finest and most expensive brands of champagne, wines etc…

How do I pay the APA?
APA is payable in advance of your yacht charter, and normally at the same time as paying your initial charter fee. This is usually by bank transfer.

What happens if my APA does not cover the expenses on the yacht charter?
In the event that you ‘overspend’ your APA, you will need to pay up, before disembarking. You may be obliged to top up the APA during the yacht charter.

What if the APA yacht charter is more than I would like to spend?
If for example, you have budgeted €xxxxx to spend on expenses, but the APA is double that figure, you will still need to pay the APA in advance. However, you should communicate carefully your expenses budget with the broker and the Captain. If you put realistic constraints on the budget for food and drinks, then the Captain will do his/her best to stay within this budget. If the Captain and yacht broker know the figure you want to work with, then they will be able to assess how feasible it is in advance, and for example; adapt the planned itinerary to meet your budget, in terms of fuel spend. With clear communication, realistic budgets, and advanced provisioning, it may indeed (depending on your requests and the yacht) be possible to spend a lot less than the APA and have the difference returned to you at the end of the yacht charter.

Why is Koh Samui so famous?

Koh Samui’s varied beaches, including the lively Chaweng and tranquil Lamai, offer activities ranging from water sports to peaceful walks. The island’s location near other destinations like Ang Thong Marine Park and Koh Phangan allows for diverse experiences, from snorkeling to exploring nightlife. This mix of scenic beauty and accessibility makes Koh Samui the perfect base for exploring the Gulf of Siam’s picture perfect islands.

Is koh samui better than Phuket?

Koh Samui is known for its tranquil atmosphere, offering a contrast to Phuket’s lively nightlife. Its less crowded environment allows for a more intimate vacation experience. The island’s beaches are a highlight, with their clear waters and white sand, perfect for relaxation and water activities. The local culture is another draw, with friendly residents known for their hospitality. While Phuket is accessible by road, Koh Samui’s seclusion contributes to its exclusive charm.

How many days is ideal for Koh Samui?

The ideal length of your Koh Samui trip depends on your interests. For beach relaxation and spa treatments, a 3-5 day stay is typically sufficient. However, if you’re keen on exploring the island’s attractions, like the Big Buddha or Na Muang Waterfalls, and engaging in activities like snorkeling, a week-long visit is recommended. For a deeper cultural immersion, including temple visits, cooking classes, and experiencing the nightlife, consider extending your stay to 10 days or more. Additionally, if you plan to explore nearby islands such as Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, add 2-3 days per island to your itinerary. Ultimately, the best duration for your trip will align with your personal travel style and the experiences you seek in Koh Samui.

What to avoid in Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is famous for its beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and cultural richness. However, tourists should be mindful of certain issues to ensure a pleasant stay. Here are the top five things to watch out for:

Taxis: Some taxis might overcharge. Use reputable services or apps like Grab, and agree on the fare beforehand. Alternatively, discuss chaffeur options with a reputable company.

Road Safety: Driving can be risky due to reckless driving and poor road conditions.

Jet Ski Scams: To avoid being falsely charged for damages on a rented jet ski, inspect it thoroughly before use and take photos. Rent from trusted operators.

Tourist Pricing: Compare prices, negotiate politely, and try local markets or eateries for authentic experiences at better prices.

Bugs: The island has mosquitoes and other insects. Use repellents, wear protective clothing, and stay in places with screens or air conditioning to avoid bites.

Please ask us for more advice when you meet us on Koh Samui. We are happy to share our years of experience here to help you be more informed.

Perfect day on the sea. We chartered on 2 separate days the 43ft Belize catamaran “ Kindred Spirit “ and what a great choice that was. From the very responsive and super helpful Charterer Chris to the very experienced and super friendly Captain Lek and his crew we were fully taken care of at every turn. To experience Koh Samui from the sea is a fantastic way of getting a better sense of the beautiful island and the amazing landscapes all around. The food on the boat was equally great and of quite unexpected quality. We will for sure be back someday to “wash, rinse, dry & repeat”🤗🏝⚓️🛥
